MOTM - May 1, 2008 - REMEMBER IT'S AT FADO

It's time to drink in some of that Irish ambiance (and Guinness) at Fado. Remember, we are conducting an experiment by hopping from bar to bar for a few weeks to try to decide if there is one where we wish to settle down. So this week it's at Fado. Fado is pronounced "f'doe" and it means "long ago" in Irish talk. Fado is directly across the street from 219West and next door to Halycon on 4th.

Topics of discussion will be where MOTM will be held next week. Since there is an 80% chance I will not be there, someone needs to conduct this survey. I know you all can drink without me. I've heard the rumors.

In other important news, this story is being suppressed by all the plastic surgeons in town. Perhaps Fado carries this brand of beer.

In keeping with Lone Star Todd's requests and the Irish theme of this week, here are some Irish related pictures:

You should also study this to know how to talk in Fado.

Peace. Out.

Recap - MOTM - April 24, 2008

Last night we tried 219West. Very nice, but there is no real patio and the consensus seemed to be that while the weather permits, the preference was to be outside.
So, in keeping with the democratic principles that made this organization great, next week we are going to convene at Fado's, which is directly across the street from 219West.
We will follow that by bar hopping each week for the next few weeks to sample all this area has to offer. Suggestions for upcoming weeks have included the roof patios at "6" and Speakeasy, Key Bar and the newly remodeled Lavaca Street Bar (which is kinda outside). If you have preferences, please let them be known in the comments.
Turnout last night was great. Angel, Lone Star Todd (drinking Mexican margaritas, of all things), Sharon, J-Spot, Shunit, Stephenie and her entourage Will and James, Stuart, Drew Z, Tom V, and Clovis were all there. I sure there were others but I've explained this problem before. Oh, yeah, Amanda was there but she requested that I not mention her again because of her prominent feature in a recent post, so I will definitely not mention that Amanda was there and how happy we all were that Amanda was there.

Here are a couple of somewhat topical copyright violations:

MOTM - April 24, 2008 - Don't Forget That It's Now at 219West

Everybody should try out the new locale to see if it works for a long term solution.
For the purposes of inducing attendance, particularly by Lone Star Todd, it is rumored that 219West has hired this bartender.
She might have looked like this:
However, she really looks like this:

Not bad, but for that kind of work, you really need this:

See you there. Peace. Out.

MOTM - April 24, 2008 - NEW LOCATION!!!

NOTICE: MOTM will occur at the 219West Restaurant, 219 West 4th Street (southeast corner of 4th and Lavaca; 2 blocks south of The Belmont) this Thursday beginning at 5:00 pm. See map.
Topics for discussion will be how much better/worse this is than the Belmont and whether we should do it on a different night.
I will try to hit a group with an e-mail on the venue change but if you know someone that might want to come, it's your civic duty to inform them.
Your ticket for entry follows:

MOTM - April 17, 2008

So the Belmont was having a big fashion show of some variety. The patio and the upstairs was cordoned off and I was relegated to the funky dark bar inside.
As I sipped my Pacifico and did my best not to look like the old creepy guy at the bar (not successfully), I decided that no one else was going to show up. Luke was in Chicago, ABerry and Christa were in Fayettenam, J-Spot had told me she was going to a thing for her sister's children that had something to do with "Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan", Steph's clients kept getting in her way and it was almost 6 pm. Amanda wasn't there either but I have inadvertently omitted reference to her before, so a big shout out to Amanda, where ever you were.
So I walked out and almost ran over G-Low, who had chosen to spend time at MOTM before he proceeded to a couple of other bar splinter groups' functions. By the time we had finished our next drink, Lone Star Todd, Ryan and the ever lovely Tiana had appeared. Lone Star Todd tried to break away from his prior addiction but even though he specifically ordered something other than Lone Star, the Belmont refused to allow him to change and continued to bring him Lone Star. Some things you just can't change, I guess.
Making a debut appearance was Karl, my very good friend from my time with CSC. Karl added some much needed panache and sophistication to the group. Then Stuart showed up and we averaged out again.
We discussed moving MOTM. From the discussion last night and some of the comments to earlier posts, there was an overwhelming consensus to try 219 West next week. In this case, an overwhelming consensus means at least two people mentioned it. Paul Bunyan, in his comment to a previous post, while setting a new MOTM blog record for puns in a post, had some good suggestions, but we completely ignored them. I'm sure we'll revisit this issue again, if 219 West doesn't work out or when we tire of their appetizers. It's not like there's a dearth of bars in the area. We'll try Thursday night again, although looking at their website weekly lineup, some other night might be preferable, but it's Thursday night next week.
I'll try to put out other posts and notify other people of the site change, but spread the word.

Breaking News - Tree Guy Has Surgery

The tree dude (see earlier post and Lone Star Todd's iPhone) went under the knife and has a new attitude. See here.
How many bad puns can you make for this?
Here are some to get you started:
After surgery, he now wants to branch out.
He just wants everybody to leaf him alone.
He would like to have a girl friend because he knows he can pop a woody.
He just wants to get to the root of the matter.

I know. Tasteless. I apologize. I won't do it any more. A tree doesn't have to fall on me.

MOTM - April 17, 2008

Having detected no appreciable outcry for immediate change in the site of the MOTM, we will gather at the Belmont tomorrow afternoon.

The only topic for discussion tomorrow night will be whether we change sites and if so, where do we go? If you are not there and wish to make a suggestion, included it in the comments below. If you want to be heard, be sure to be there tomorrow night.

If you don't give a damn either way and you are reading this by mistake, have a good day.

See you tomorrow evening.

Peace. Out.

Oh, yeah, sorry. More pictures for Lone Star Todd.

Potential for Changing Site of MOTM

There has been increased rumblings among the natives about changing the site of MOTM. We have gathered at the Belmont since the inception of MOTM but there is no reason why we can't change. The commission that the Belmont paid me for bringing you all there was not all that much anyway.
So, talk amongst yourselves, and come up with some suggestions. Anywhere at all is OK, however, I think that if the new location meets a few criteria, the potential for success is enhanced:
  • It should be close enough to 8th and Lavaca that people can walk or it should be close enough that the distance is not a detriment to attendance. It's my observation that you people are relatively lazy and if it is too much of an inconvenience you won't even go out for a drink. Even with such good company.
  • The drinks should be good and there should be a happy hour price. As well as being lazy, you all are also cheap, struggling young professionals.
  • The food should be better than average bar food also with happy hour pricing.

You can put your suggestions in the comments or we can discuss on Thursday (at the Belmont).

Oh, by the way, happy tax day. Aren't estimated taxes awesome?

In Other Unrelated News

Having absolutely nothing to do with last night's MOTM, please consider the following:
1. Is there sufficient interest in getting a road trip together to do a casino weekend in Louisiana at any time? If so, indicate in the comments. If enough people wanted to go, we might be able to get a casino to pick up some of the tab for us group of high rollers. Probably talking about leaving on a Friday afternoon and coming back on Sunday morning. Talk amongst yourselves and in the comments.
2. In breaking news, Shunit has another boy friend. Shunit and Richard up in a tree, k-i-s-s......
3. Lone Star Todd was OK with this blog continuing but requested more pictures and links to pictures, both of a creepy and erotic nature (psychologists would go to town with that) so with that in mind (warning-not safe for work ["NSFW"] or if you are squeamish):

Just for a data point, Lone Star Todd carries a picture of the tree guy on his iPhone.

4. Sabrina, you can continue to be a lurker on this blog if you wish, but we welcome input (positive or negative) from anyone.

5. We should discuss changing the day and place of the MOTM. Variety is the spice of life and consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

Peace. Out.

MOTM - April 10, 2008

This had all the makings of a complete bust until several of you stepped forward and really saved the day. There were a goodly number of you but we will only mention Amanda. Apparently, she has attended several MOTMs before and although I listed the people I thought were there, I omitted her each time. This apparently has hurt her feelings in some way. Go figure. She even went so far as to question whether her personality was such that I would not even notice her. Nothing could be further from the truth. She is one of my favorite people (in spite of her questionable taste in college football teams) and any omission on my part has been repeatedly warned about as being a result of diminished blood flow to whatever part of me is doing the thinking at the time.
So, to follow up on the Amanda theme of this post, Amanda wants to host a cook out at her house (honestly) but she doesn't want to plan and then not get a good turnout. I understand her pain. You should talk it up in the comments to take Amanda up on her generous offer.
Also, Amanda wants to do karaoke some night. She chalks that up to her Asian heritage. Apparently, Asians really like the karaoke. Who knew? Also indicate in your comments your desire and appetite for some karaoke.
Amanda, I bet you think this post is about you. Don't you, don't you?

In Other Unrelated Matters

Some of you have graciously (or foolishly) asked about our recent trip to India. More information than you would ever want can be found here.

MOTM - April 10, 2008

OK, we'll keep this blog thing going for another week, anyway. Really, if anyone gives a damn and wants to dazzle the literati that attend this event with your writing skills and erudition, this blog can be had at a good price. You know that there isn't a very high standard for this anyway, so you could benefit from the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Let's gather at the Belmont tomorrow in the gloaming.

Topics for discussion will include a possible road trip to parts unknown but that include arenas for conducting games of chance.

Mode of dress will be Las Vegas Ratpack.
Let it be written. Let it be done.
Peace. Out.

MOTM - April 3, 2008

Good for you. You're doing better. Mike G., Steph, J-Spot, Sharon, Sonali, Stuart, Ryan. Good work.
I probably won't be there next week.
Also, this blog has probably jumped the shark, so unless someone else wants to take it on, I will probably take it down soon.
That doesn't mean that MOTM will stop. It just can exist on its own without the lame blog posts.
Peace. Out.

MOTM - April 3, 2008

It's seems like a good idea to get together tomorrow night. What do you think?
Let's get it started around 5 at the Belmont. The weather should be good for indulging in adult beverages (isn't it always?) and I know you love the company.
So, put on your best bib and tucker (I don't even know what that means) and sidle on down. All your friends and most of the people that really find you irritating will be there.
You really have no excuse.
Peace. Out.
